The Spark
I struggled as a small child with reading. My mother sat on blankets with me under the shade of trees, teaching me to read Danny and the Dinosaur, The Fire Cat, and Harry and the Lady Next Door. She was very patient with me — this I remember.
And once I picked it up, I couldn't put books down. Once I began reading, I wanted to write. My mother was my spark.
"Once I began reading, I wanted to write."

Why I Write
When this world becomes too much — when the hatred, the violence, the wars, the politics, and the daily grind become too much to handle and I want to just scream from the top of a mountain in frustration — I create a place where I can escape for a short while.
A place where I can get a short reprieve from "life," just long enough to pull myself together and come back to reality with a fresh perspective. Writing is art, but it is also an escape of my own making. It is hard work, but it comes back to me ten-fold.
And when it is really, very good writing, it helps others escape "life" for a while too. What could be bad about that?
Writing is art, but it is also an escape of my own making. And when it is really, very good writing, it helps others escape "life" for a while too.

Things You Should Know
Earthworm phobia — 100% my older sister's fault. She pulled a big, fat, juicy earthworm in half in front of my face while we were fishing at Potter's Pond, north of Topeka. I have never recovered.
I make a mean sourdough bread. The kind that makes your whole house smell like a bakery.
Clock Tower on PS2 and The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion are two of my all-time favorite games. Yes, I have opinions.
I have a massive family — literally more than a hundred members total from both sides. Two sisters, a baby brother I could not live without, one daughter, a phenomenal son-in-law, and three beautiful grandchildren.

Ready to Escape?
